Guus Scholten (Bill Pykett questions)

Many thanks to Guus Scholten for his obedience storey, I can only think myself that it must be twice as hard to succeed when you are limited to how many shows you can attend in a season, so congratulations Guus on your many achievements

Question 1. How and when did you start your obedience journey?

I started my obedience journey in 1970 at a local club in the province where I lived with my crossbreed Sita. The dog belonged to my sister, which I walked and cared for while she was at work. My father didn’t let me have my own dog yet, he didn’t like the fact that a dog in the Netherlands only had limited freedom in and around the house he used to have in Indonesia. There he always had dogs walking around the house for security and vermin. control . I used to take home every dog that was loose in the village where I lived at the time, but they never stayed longer than a week, as soon as my father came home from work (he was at work at the Hoogovens factory from Sunday evening to Friday evening). in North Holland) the dog had to leave again. I also spent the last six months of my primary school life with foster parents. The man was a police officer and had a German Shepherd Max that had been rejected as a police dog, which I was also allowed to care for and walk, which I was very proud of. My father also thought that at the age of 14 I did not yet have the responsibility to take care of a dog.

I have proven that I could do it. When my sister wanted to get rid of the dog because he was causing a lot of damage in the house, I begged my father to let me keep the dog on the condition that as soon as I failed to do so, he would personally take the dog to the shelter.

At the local club I followed courses up to the highest level . We participated in local and national competitions with good results.

Question 2 ; Is there any chance you remember which was your first show you wen t to , and where and when ?

The first show I went to was the South London show I think in 1990. I was training with Brian McGovern at the time, we went to the show with a busload of interested people, I was amazed at what I saw there and how many people were there on a weekday.

Question 3 ; Do you remember who you trained with when you started your Obedience Journey .

My Obedience journey started in 1988 with Brian McGovern on the grounds of his home. I started with my crossbreed Susie and brought her to the C-class. But if I have to be completely honest I didn’t get further than a second place with her. After a lot of talking with my husband Wil I then bought my first Border Collie. Bodie from Ritzy’s Rascal Bodie was a tricolor very social with our other dogs and cats and eager to learn he liked to play with his toys. After 7 months we discovered that he was limping that did not go away after several visits to the vet. To make a long story short the vet made a wrong diagnosis and as a result we ended up with a specialist in Antwerp. He found that the head in his hip was broken. The head was replaced by a metal head half a year of rehabilitation and 8000 guilders poorer he still remained lame. The enthusiasm for working and training remained with a slight limitation.

Later I started training with Trudy and Angela. There I started with my second border collie Colliewood Velasquez Giovanni. They introduced the method that Jo Hill used, which was an eye-opener for me.

Question 4 ; Who do you recall watching who inspired you and thinking-yes that’s my idea of Obedience and thinking-yes I can do that ?

At first it was my good friend Lenie with Wacky Backy, Brian met Whimpy and Marius met Whooly.

Later we also saw the English people Sylvia Bisshop, Sandy Wadhams,Kathy Russel, Mary Ray,Linda Ruhterford,John Higgins,Michelle Newman , Kamal Fernandez,Dot and Ian Watts, Carol Clack, Lyn Tozer, Kim Innes, Wendy Hagger, Herbie Watson, Anita and Roy Neal, Kay Raven ,Lyn Green, Philamina Barnes, Sylvia Michel, Shirley Clowes, Paul Anderson, Neil Short, Stephanie Woollam, Ann Northfield, Karen Davies, Ann Rogers, Brenda Pothipar, Allison and Alan Gresty, Domini Allday ,Lou Jackson, I don’t remember the names of the dogs.

Question 5 ; When and where did you win your very first rosette?

It was the Ditton show in 2003 where I won my first rosette pre-beginners and beginners with Bodie . The rules had not yet been adjusted, now we can start in the class we also walk in in the Netherlands.

We were then at a show for the first time where we could take the dogs without them having to go into quarantine and then had to start in pre-beginners even though we were already in the C-class in the Netherlands. Before we could go to England we first had to get an inspection report from the government and vaccinations from the vet, now it is only the rabies vaccination and worming treatment.

Question 6 ; Now tell us where you won your first ticket and how you felt.

Colliewood Velasquez my second border collie

I won my first ticket in 2008 the show in Elm Park under judge Wendy Birch with my border collie Colliewood Velasquez call name Giovanni.

We had a run-of for first place with the famous woman Linda Rutherford I always looked up to with her fantastic dog with lots of tickets Ob Ch Sinedes Special Secret call name Flynn .

It was very exciting because something went wrong with both of us. The only thing I can remember is that it was very cold and the last class that was still going and then hearing your name was overwhelming. When I think back to this I still get shivers down my body.

Question 7 ; You have had many successes over the years, including winning Crufts, but which do you remember that brings you the most satisfaction and why ?

Question 9 ; When you stopped going to shows did you think you would return to the Obedience ring again ,and did you find it difficult to get started again.

The corona time was the reason to no longer go to shows with the block times that were used.

Then there were problems with Paul’s heart, it was not until 2023 that we felt like going to England again. That was also the year that I thought that the last qualifier for a ticket was so bad and I just couldn’t get it. I’m glad I came back in 2024, this has been a top year for me. my last qualifier and winning the 3 tickets in one year.

Question 10 ; Over the years you have had some lovely dogs. But which one did you find the hardest to train, and what reason?

Giovanni had a very high head position which pushed his hindquarters down which was difficult to correct.

Gucci had a lot of problems with the stay exercises.

Coco had a lot of problems with the atmosphere at the shows.

Question 11; Since you started going to shows do you think that the standard of work has improved or not?

I think the standard of working in the ring is changing, there are many trainings in the ring. You see a lot of motivated dogs who enjoy working more. What I also notice is that there are fewer participants at shows.

Question 12 ; What do you enjoy most about the shows ?

The competition and the different dog breeds
